Everybody Needs a Partner

Everybody Needs a Partner
by Jennifer Leonard

One thing I’ve learned for sure on this weight loss journey is the need for a partner. It is so important to have someone that comes alongside us each step of the way. We need people who will encourage us, hold us accountable, listen, and offer suggestions when needed. We need to really decide who can meet all that criteria. Here are the three characteristics to a good partner:

1) They must be honest and not be afraid to tell you what you need to hear. We don’t need someone to just make us “feel good”. We need people who are willing to speak the truth—even when it’s tough. Each of us needs someone who can say—“are you sure you’re exercising every day?” or “Maybe eating fast food 5 times a week isn’t such a winning solution to your ...

Anybody Can Do 10 Minutes

Anybody Can Do 10 Minutes

by Jennifer Leonard

Do you ever have those moments when you are working out that you just feel like you cannot possibly go a minute longer?  It happens to me all the time.  It’s normally  within the first 10 minutes of exertion that I think to myself there is no way I can do this a whole hour or even thirty minutes.  I’ve come to believe that the biggest obstacle I have with exercise is all in my head.  Physically I know that I can work out for an hour or two and my body won’t shut down.  Mentally is a whole other ball game.

For me, it blew my mind to think about how much weight I needed to lose.  I vividly remember the day I stepped on the scale for my initial weigh-in at Weight Watchers.  When my leader told me 436 lbs, I almost turned around and walked out the door.  It seemed impossible initially.  It was at that moment that I knew I had to break it down step by step.  It had to be one little change each week otherwise I would become easily frustrated and discouraged.  You can’t ...

I am originally from Natchitoches, LA--home of the Louisiana meat pie and Steel Magnolias.  My family moved to Franklin, TN in 1988 just as I entered the 9th grade.  Growing up in Louisiana and then Tennessee meant that I ate a lot of good southern and Cajun food.  I grew up always being overweight--normally the heaviest child in each of grades.  As I graduated high school I weighed over 200 lbs and over 300 lbs after college.  I continued to gain weight all through my 20's and early 30's.

Right about the time I turned 35, it was getting close to the time for the adoption of my 8 year old foster daughter to become finalized.  Kody had come into my life about 3 years before and I knew that if I needed to be the mom she deserved then I needed to ...
