Spotlight: What is PiYo?

PiYo seems to be the newest fitness craze that promises to whip you into shape, but how and what does it mean?  PiYo (short for Pilates and Yoga) is a sleek combination of the two exercises and was created by Chalene Johnson, the founder of the Turbo Kick System. PiYo combines the muscle & core building benefits of Pilates with the mind-body, flexibility, and strength advantages of Yoga.  The kicker is that PiYo is composed of non-stop, continuous movements to create a high-energy, high-sweat experience.  

 

A Few Characteristics of PiYo:

Franklin Tomorrow’s Get Fit Franklin to serve as pilot for Governor’s Healthier Tennessee Initiative

Gov. Bill Haslam today announced that Franklin Tomorrow’s Get Fit Franklin program will represent the City of Franklin as a pilot program of the Governor’s Foundation for a Healthier Tennessee program.

Healthier Tennessee is led by Gov. Bill Haslam and made possible by The Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness, a non-profit corporation dedicated to enabling and encouraging Tennesseans to lead healthier lives.

Eight communities across Tennessee have been selected and Franklin Mayor Ken Moore asked Franklin Tomorrow to represent the city through its Get Fit Franklin program, which Moore has supported since its inception in 2011.

Get Fit Franklin is a program of Franklin Tomorrow, which partners with the City of Franklin, Vanderbilt Health, and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, along with numerous other organizations and health and fitness agencies.

Besides providing resistance and increasing endurance, the water will help support much of your weight, which minimizes stress on the body and joints. Exercising in the pool will also help increase balance and joint range of motion, which is particularly beneficial for women who spend a great deal of time on their feet as well as new moms who are looking to get their body back in shape in a safe and healthy manner. Here’s a great routine for the next time you take a dip.

How it works: Do each exercise for 60 seconds in a pool so that the water is at waist-level.
